When it comes to club soccer, it’s as much about where you go and who is there as it is about who you are. That’s why the Tormenta FC Academy 03 Girls travel far and wide to find the best competition.
The Hilton Head Island-based team has pulled together some of the area’s top players and taken on the top teams the southeastern United States has to offer.
“This team is able to excel because we find the most committed players who train four or more times per week over the course of their career,” coach Jeremy Aven said. “Their families are committed to attending the most competitive showcases and events that allow them to be seen by college coaches from around the country.”
Aven’s team had a great year in 2019, capturing the state title and reaching the quarterfinals of the U.S. Youth Soccer Regional Championships this summer.
The team is made up of standout players from throughout the Lowcountry and Coastal Empire, including Hilton Head Island’s Sadie Callen, Shania Diaz, Ella Maldonado, Kathryn Russo, Megan Spiehs, Andrea Tapia, and Addie Trew; Bluffton’s Haley Majors; and Beaufort’s Quinn Wilson.
Many of the players have been on the same club teams since they were 9 years old, Aven said, but several have joined the team in search of the best opportunities to play in front of top college coaches. The team also adds the top players from younger age groups from time to time, better preparing them to play at the next level.
Two of the team’s top players have verbally committed to play for strong Southeastern Conference programs, as Spiehs has pledged to play at South Carolina and Diaz is committed to Vanderbilt, and Aven said several more “will commit to a college of their choice” by their junior year of high school.
The team has a top-notch schedule planned this season, including trips to the National Premier League Showcase at Lake Norman near Charlotte; the Disney College Showcase in Orlando, Florida; and the Jefferson Cup in Richmond, Virginia.
