Home School2At its best, family life can be compared to a well-oiled machine with a thousand moving parts. At its worst, well … we’ve all been there. Time-consuming extracurriculars, stacks of homework and other everyday responsibilities can make daily life seem more like the perfect storm.

But there is relief in sight — when it comes to homework, at least. Following is a directory of after-school clubs, tutoring programs and online resources that can offer help when you need it most. Costs vary from free to pricey, but many of the below resources offer scholarships, so parents, don’t be afraid to ask!


These online services match students with tutors. Sessions can be done online or in person and are typically billed by the hour, with costs varying by tutor and subject difficulty. Some groups, like Varsity Tutors, also offer “instant tutoring” for immediate help with homework questions, while others, like Tutor Doctor, offer in-home assessment and instruction.

Mathnasium (mathnasium.com/bluffton) is a drop-in learning center that provides math assistance for students in kindergarten through 12th grade. Packages are purchased by the month and include up to 12 drop-in group sessions.

Brain Balance (brainbalancecenters.com/locations/bluffton-hilton-head/) works with students with ADHD, processing, behavioral or learning disorders by targeting academic, sensory-motor, nutritional and social skills. Fees vary by the level of instruction required.


Both the Bluffton and Hilton Head libraries offer print and digital resources, as well as computers with high-speed internet, study tables and free online educational programs. The Learning Express Library offers text preparation, skill-building and other career and life skills resources. The Boys & Girls Clubs in Bluffton and on Hilton Head Island provide snacks, homework help and recreational activities for children ages 6-18 from 3 to 7 p.m. Monday through Friday. For more information, call 843-379-5430 or go to bgclowcountry.org.

Cross Schools runs an after-school program that is open to all Bluffton-area students through fourth grade. The program, which goes until 6 p.m. Monday through Friday, includes snacks, homework help, tutoring and free play. Island Rec Center’s drop-in after school program provides snack, homework time and leisure activities from 2:45 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday for kids ages 5-13. For more information, call 843-681-7273 or go to islandreccenter.org/childcare/.

Neighborhood Outreach Connection (noc-sc.org/) provides after-school learning centers near the Cordillo and Oaks communities of Hilton Head and off of Simmonsville Road in Bluffton. Its programs are available to children in kindergarten through eighth grade at no charge. Programs include snacks, homework help, tutoring and enrichment activities.
