Going to school for the first time can be very exciting, but it can also be a little scary. Whether you are a first-time student or just new to the neighborhood, students often need some reassurance that everything will be OK.

From choosing the wrong clothes, leaving your special blanket behind at home, or missing a parent while you are away, there are many things about starting a new school that children have in common. Reading these titles may help lessen the stress of the first day.

School’s First Day of School by Adam Rex

It's the first day of school at Frederick Douglass Elementary and everyone's just a little bit nervous, especially the school itself. What will the children do once they come? Will they like the school? Will they be nice to him? The school has a rough start, but as the day goes on, he soon recovers when he sees that he's not the only one going through first-day jitters.

This Is My Home, This Is My School by Jonathan Bean

Drawing from his own childhood experiences, Jonathan Bean takes the autobiographically inspired family he introduced in Building Our House through the special rhythms and routines of a homeschooling day. For young Jonathan and his sisters, Mom is the teacher and a whole lot more, and Dad is the best substitute any kid could want. From math, science, and field trips to recess, show-and-tell, and art, a school day with this intrepid, inventive family will seem both completely familiar and totally unique.

Owen by Kevin Henkes

Owen had a fuzzy yellow blanket. "Fuzzy goes where I go," said Owen. But Mrs. Tweezers disagreed. She thought Owen was too old for a blanket. Owen disagreed. No matter what Mrs. Tweezers came up with, Blanket Fairies or vinegar, Owen had the answer. But when school started, Owen's mother knew just what to do, and everyone -- Owen, Fuzzy, and even Mrs. Tweezers -- was happy.

Timothy Goes to School by Rosemary Wells

Timothy is excited about starting school until his classmate Claude makes him second guess if school is as fun as he expected. Timothy learns about being accepted and making friends during the first week of his first year at school.

Not This Bear: A First Day of School Story by Alyssa Satin Capucilli

It's Bear's first day of school, and he's a bit reluctant to go. Mama says all bears love school; but Bear isn't so sure. School turns out to be full of fun -- painting pictures, listening to stories, and making new friends. Maybe this bear will like school after all.
